There's No Excuse, USPS.

There’s no excuse to ship a small ass slip of paper in a regularly sized envelope - only for it to go to a sorting station 40 miles north and back down. Like, from one local zip code to a neighboring other, that’s unacceptable.

An SD (Super Deformed) cute pair of Subarus for your time.

PS. If someone tells me this is a standard procedure for local mail, I will gladly take my new MSi and slap you with it.

USPS has closed down many sorting facilities in the past few years, and extended the acceptable times for how long a piece of first class mail should be delivered.

So yes, it is different than before, and yes, it is within the standards that the USPS set for itself.

Except it’s not really acceptable for some forms of mail. Heck, I’m waiting for a check from college. You can probably guess how much it’s worth.

We actually ship the majority of our stuff with USPS just because they’re usually the cheapest option. (Fed-Ex becomes cheaper for stuff like gas tanks or small engines)

For all their problems, they make things fairly easy for the shipper.

The only time I had to mail using USPS was with a traffic signal - granted, it took me and my father three tries to get the box size right (despite being told later that the original size actually was acceptable a few days later.)

Might not be acceptable to you as the recipient of the mail, but it’s acceptable to USPS according to the new, relaxed standards it set for itself.

A set of relaxed standards that would never work for a growing civilization.

I’ll give them a decade, at best.

We just give weight and dimensions (if our own box) or select a flat-rate box, and then pay and print a label. Then we just drop it by the post office. This may be made easier by going through Ebay, for all I know.

Certain members of congress are trying to force USPS to adhere to the older, faster first class delivery standards, even if USPS thinks it can’t make money doing so.

So...call your friendly locally-elected federal official.

DHL used to ship packages first to a facility about 45 min away, then to one 3 hours away then to one 30 min. Every time adding at lease day to deliveries.

The last time I did that, I rode up to their steps on a bright yellow Moped with the biggest exhaust pipe (known for a moped, ever) advocating for reasonable motorcycle laws.

I think I left one interesting impression on them... albeit an interestingly disturbing one.

I strangely prefer UPS and DHL - mostly because I don’t really have strict expectations for them. There was that one time (UPS) I had to ship a mate’s computer - mind you, it was housed in a Corsair 900D. They actually had to take a bit longer mostly because they weren’t going to risk damaging anything inside (note, shipping foam was used) and I said “eh, I’d rather it be shipped safely than with a dent.”

AtlasM is correct in that the USPS has closed many small sorting facilities. It has also been mandated that every piece of mail that gets sent must have both sides of the envelope photographed. That is the change that resulted in the closing of many sorting facilities and resulted in the end of locally sorted mail. My local post office is rural. If I want a piece of mail delivered to a PO box and I drop it off at the counter, it still gets sent to the nearest sorting center which is 2 hours away from me so that it gets both sides photographed.
